Of the Persisters series:
Persisters is an ongoing series of large-scale portrait paintings depicting trailblazing women in their pursuit of justice at this current time in history.
After the 2016 presidential election, this project began as I sought internal solace and external answers to the difficult questions that the reality of the new Republican administration posed. It was clear that I was not alone in my quest as women in the United States of America and the world over quickly began to react and rise up to demand equality. Women took to the streets to make their voices heard. They also ran for office achieving an unprecedented number of electoral victories throughout the United States. After I attended the Womens March on Washington in January 2017 I was compelled to respond to the political crisis I was experiencing through my work.
Though there are many women taking extraordinary steps to make change, the subjects I choose to paint tend to resonate with me because of one particular dynamic moment, when they suddenly become the firebrand for what they represent. In stepping up, these courageous, dynamic women have become larger-than-life and symbols of hope for many other women from all walks of life. I make large scale, direct-gaze portraits to reflect the shocking potential these women appear to possess. The act of making these portraits has defintely been cathartic and empowering while also becoming a record of this watershed moment in time.
