Dunbar makes paintings and sculptural works that explore the harmony between spontaneity and control. From pouring layers of resin to create her Horizon paintings to the brushstrokes of watercolor on yupo paper works, Marina’s process involves manipulating the surface at every step. She uses heat, air, and gravity as creative tools to ultimately give each piece a sculptural quality. The practice is both hypnotic and uncertain. Because fluid media is sensitive to its environment, a deep breath, a slight shift of focus, a sound in the distance can all cause the paint to sway from the pre-determined path.
